As science teachers, we want to help our students develop the skills needed for future success, learn to core concepts, and understand the nature of science. A great way to do this is to use models in the classroom. This is especially true in Earth Science where we study large systems that can be abstract for students. Models can represent a system or parts of a system and aid students in gaining a more concrete understanding. Models are also used by scientists in doing their work, so by using models we initiate our students into the work of the scientist. In addition to these wonderful pedagogical reasons for using models, building models is fun and engaging for students and teacher. This session will focus on some models that can be easily integrated into the Earth Science curriculum to help us use this valuable tool more effectively.
