We are all familiar with the difficulties of translating our love for our science to students that dislike the subject.  Indeed, encouraging such a population can seem insurmountable, especially if those students have already convinced themselves that they “don’t like it”, are “not good at it”, or are simply passionate about something else.  Using popular media and culture can bridge the gap between content mastery and student disinterest, leading to increased participation in class exercises, improved understanding of basic biological principles, increased critical thinking skills, and concept retention.  This not only applies to biology, but can be adapted to many other scientific fields.  In this session I will present the framework for one team project that I use in my non-majors Biology course (large classroom setting) that is easily transferrable to 7-12 grade classrooms.
