This session will introduce participants to the new UT Science with Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards through a hands-on task to help highlight the major shifts in the format and function of the new 7th Grade science standards.
The new 7th Grade SEEd Standards will not be used in Utah until the 2017-18 school year. This session will look at how the vision for the SEEd Standards can be incorporated into the current 7th grade core science standards. The main focus will be on the relationships between the old and new standards, and teaching approaches that are beneficial to science learning with both documents.
Research Quest is for any 6th – 8th grade teacher working to advance critical thinking skills – outlined throughout the core curriculum - in his or her classroom. It is made up of three investigations that are tightly aligned with Utah’s new science and ELA standards http://researchquest.org/teachers/align.shtml and provides applied, authentic learning experiences for students. Research Quest allows students to practice the essential range of skills – communication, collaboration, and critical thinking - most necessary for academic and future success while supporting teachers in assessing student learning in responsive, actionable ways.
Our new science standards integrate science and engineering practices. This is a hands-on workshop for seventh grade teachers who would like to learn how to incorporate engineering into the new science standards.
When I started teaching, I thought there were just some things you have to teach and they just have to learn it. How wrong I was! I will present and demonstrate ways to teach your class without ever having the students complain that they have to take "Notes" and without you ever having "lecture." We will discuss the use of discovery activities, computer simulations and inquiry based experiments that allow students to learn science concepts on their own instead of just having the information taught to them.
